Hyperthyroidism
Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid
hormone. When this occurs, the body's metabolism is increased, which can cause a variety of
symptoms. If your thyroid gland is making too much thyroid hormone, your whole body speeds up
. If you are hyperthyroid, you will have a low level of TSH and high levels of thyroid hormone
in your blood. If you have hyperthyroidism, you may feel jittery, be less tolerant to heat,
sweat more than usual, and may experience weight loss. That is because the extra thyroid
hormone in your blood is speeding up your entire body.
Left untreated, hyperthyroidism can
cause serious damage to your health, so it is very important that the disorder be identified
early and treated properly.
Diagnosis of Hyperthyroidism
Blood Tests - If your doctor suspects that you might have hyperthyroidism, he or she will order blood tests to measure the amount of thyroid hormone and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Typically, in the patient with hyperthyroidism, the thyroid hormone level is high and the TSH level is low.
Scans -If you are hyperthyroid, a thyroid scan might be done to help determine which type of hyperthyroidism you have, Graves´ disease, toxic nodular goiter, or thyroiditis.
